Author Clarence J. Parks and Sister’s Network Prince Georges County Team Up to Take Action Against Procrastination During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

“Don’t Procrastinate, Take Action Against Breast Cancer” Campaign Launches October 1, 2013

The Sister's Network of Prince Goerges County, MdBowie, Maryland— Procrastination is one of the biggest contributors to high mortality rates stemming from breast cancer in the African-American community.  To combat this issue, Clarence J. Parks, author of Overcome Procrastination God’s Way and Sister’s Network Prince Georges County are launching the “Don’t Procrastinate, Take Action Against Breast Cancer” Campaign during October which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the American Cancer Society, “there are strategies that may help prevent breast cancer [to] include: avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake.”  The most obvious strategy is early detection by mammography. The American Cancer Society says, “early detection of breast cancer by mammography also leads to a greater detection of treatment options, including less-aggressive surgery (e.g., lumpectomy vs. mastectomy) and less-aggressive adjuvant therapy.”  However, many women procrastinate in taking these steps.

Madeline Long-Gill, breast cancer survivor and president of Sister’s Network Prince Georges County says, “women of color have a tendency to procrastinate in getting regular mammograms; self -examinations; and going to follow up doctor appointments after diagnosis and treatment.”  Parks says, “people procrastinate because there is usually some type of fear of pain or bad news or weariness of energy exertion.”  According to The Susan Komen Community Profile Report—National Capitol Area 2010, Prince Georges County, Maryland has a 30.2% mortality rate amongst African-American women which is one of the highest mortality rates in the United States of America.

During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sister’s Network Prince Georges County and Clarence J. Parks, a Prince Georges County resident  will jointly conduct webinars and tele-seminars throughout the month of October to help people get past the barriers that cause high mortality rates from breast cancer due to procrastination.  Parks will donate 1/3 of sales revenues of his book Overcome Procrastination God’s Way to Sister’s Network Prince Georges County so that they can continue to help save lives and provide a broader scope of knowledge and services to address the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting women of color in Prince Georges County.

The Sister’s Network of Prince Georges County, Md is an affiliate chapter of The Sister’s Network, Inc. Their mission is to help save lives and provide a broader scope of knowledge and services to address the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting women of color in the county. Sisters Network® Inc. is committed to increasing local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the African American community.
